Uniqueness
There Is Only One.
No retinal pattern resembles any other. No human being does either. Why should your jewelry? This page is our way of thinking about the value of the one-of-a-kind.
For us, uniqueness is not merely a promise but a biological fact. It does not come from artificial scarcity, as with many luxury brands, but from the fact that a RETINA® piece is based on a pattern of yours, personally – one that exists only a single time.
Imagine there were a million Mona Lisas.
Every copy perfect. Every brushstroke identical. Every detail reproduced exactly.
Would she still fascinate us in the same way? Probably not. Part of her value lies not in her beauty alone, but in her uniqueness. This observation reaches far beyond art.
An object can be rare without being meaningful. And meaningful without being rare. The strongest examples unite both. That is where a special kind of value arises: not an economic one, a human one.
More unique than a fingerprint
Every human being possesses a unique retina. The fine branching of its blood vessels forms only once and accompanies a person throughout their life. No two patterns are identical, not even the two eyes of one person, and not even identical twins.
For us, this fascination does not come from marketing but from research. RetinaDesign was founded by a neuroscientist with a doctorate who researched vision in Basel. In the RetinaSignature, this uniqueness becomes visible. Not as a technical application, but as a personal symbol. It is not invented. Not selected. It is discovered.
It is not a sign that stands for the person. The person themselves becomes the sign.
Personalized is not unique
An engraving makes a series product more personal. It does not make it unique: the model underneath remains identical a thousand times over. The difference lies not in the surface, but in the foundation.
Series model with an addition
- Based on a catalog model that exists many times over
- Only the surface becomes personal, for instance through an engraving
- Can be reproduced identically at any time
- Interchangeable once the addition is removed
RETINA® one-of-a-kind
- Based on your retinal pattern, which exists only once
- What is personal is the substance of the design, not an addition
- Can in principle never come into being a second time
- Remains inseparably bound to a single human being
The rarest things in the world are not objects
The longer one reflects on uniqueness, the clearer a surprising insight becomes. The rarest things in the world are often not objects. They are people. Every human being possesses a unique story, a unique perspective, a unique combination of experiences, relationships and memories.
This becomes even clearer with relationships. There are many forms of love. But every love story exists only once. There are many friendships. But each has its own course. Perhaps that is precisely where the true value of human connection lies. Not in its generality, but in its unrepeatability.
In a world where almost everything can be reproduced,
the personal grows in importance. Digital copies are endlessly available. Products are made by the millions. Images in seconds.
That is exactly why many people search for things that are not interchangeable. For things that carry a story. For things that belong to them alone.
Doubly unmistakable: handcrafted in Basel
For us, uniqueness does not end with the pattern. Every piece is crafted, set and finished by hand in our atelier on the Rheinsprung. No series production. No supplier catalogs. No two identical pieces.
The result is jewelry that is unmistakable on two levels: through the signature it carries, and through the hands that shaped it. Unique wedding rings are the most personal example of this.
You exist only once. So should your jewelry.

What distinguishes unique from personalized jewelry?
Personalized jewelry is a series model with a personal addition, such as an engraving. The model underneath exists many times over. Unique jewelry exists only once. A RETINA® piece is based on your retinal pattern and can therefore never come into being a second time.
Why is the retina unique?
The fine branching of the blood vessels in the retina forms uniquely in every human being. No two patterns are identical, not even the two eyes of one person, and not even identical twins. The pattern accompanies a person throughout their life.
Why do we perceive the one-of-a-kind as valuable?
We often treasure uniqueness not because it is rare, but because it reminds us that certain things cannot be replaced: a story, a relationship, a human being. It is precisely this unrepeatability that gives them their value.
Is the RetinaSignature a biometric or medical product?
Strictly speaking, the retinal pattern is a biometric feature. In RETINA® jewelry, however, we do not use it as a biometric or medical product, but as an aesthetic element with hidden symbolism – as a personal symbol that exists only once.
How is my retinal pattern captured?
The capture takes only a few moments, is contact-free and completely painless, and takes place directly in our atelier in Basel. We then translate the pattern into your design by hand.
Is every piece of jewelry by RetinaDesign one of a kind?
Yes. Every RETINA® piece is based on an individual retinal pattern and is handcrafted in our Basel atelier. There is no series production and no two identical pieces.
Can a second person receive the same RETINA® pattern?
No. Every retinal pattern exists only once. It cannot be transferred and cannot be replicated, which is why every RETINA® piece remains inseparably bound to a single human being.
Can two people unite their retinal patterns in one piece?
Yes. For couples, two RetinaSignatures can be merged into a shared symbol of connection, for example in wedding rings or a pendant.
Is a RETINA® piece suitable as a wedding or engagement ring?
Yes. Wedding rings in particular live from the dimension of connection. A RetinaSignature makes this connection visible and turns the ring into a one-of-a-kind piece that belongs only to you.
Can the RetinaSignature be combined with a classic symbol?
Yes. A heart, the infinity sign or the tree of life can be combined with the personal signature, so that a universal symbol and a singular human being come together in one piece.
For which occasions do people choose unique jewelry?
Often for weddings, anniversaries, births, or as a lasting memory of a special person. Wherever a connection should remain visible.
Does the retinal pattern change over the course of a lifetime?
The structure of the pattern remains stable and accompanies a person throughout their life. Your piece of jewelry thus carries a signature that belongs to you permanently.
Is unique jewelry automatically more expensive than other jewelry?
Not necessarily. The value of a RETINA® piece arises from its meaning, not from the material alone. Meaning is the rarest form of luxury, because it cannot be copied.
What makes a one-of-a-kind piece suited to becoming an heirloom?
A piece that is inseparably bound to a person more easily reaches the level of legacy. It outlasts its occasion, connects generations and is passed on.
What is a RETINA® piece of jewelry made of?
Every piece is handcrafted from precious metals in the Basel atelier. Material, form and setting are chosen individually in a personal conversation.
How is my retinal image handled?
Your retinal image is used exclusively for the design of your piece of jewelry and is treated confidentially.
Why is unique jewelry by RetinaDesign made in Basel?
We handcraft every piece in our own atelier on the Rheinsprung in Basel. Swiss craftsmanship and the personal attention in the atelier are part of what makes a piece unmistakable.
